PALPO 2016
It was the year of 2014 when Palpo, Kir-Yianni’s single vineyard Chardonnay, first came out and quickly became an emblematic single vineyard wine followed by a trully inspirational story. Its vineyard of about 10 acres was planted in 1990 by Yiannis Boutaris, the founder of Kir Yianni. Twenty-two years later, while he has already the mayor of Thessaloniki, the was an attempt to destroy it. More than 2,000 stumps were cut just a few centimeters above the root.
However, just before germination began, the damaged vines developed new shoots and the vintage of the same year produced a very small harvest that was experimentally vinified. The result was astonishing and Palpo exceeded all expectations.
This limited-production Chardonnay comes from the homonymous 1.6 ha vineyard in Amyndeon. The wine is fermented and matured for 8 months in new, French, 228 lt. oak barrels with frequent batonnage. A classy, rich and bold Chardonnay that has spent 6 years in the bottle and now expresses the greatness of Amyndeon, a premium white-wine terroir of Greece.
Only 80 bottles of the 2016 vintage will be available in Warehouse 10.
